Master of Arts scholarship in Korean Studies

The ANU Korea Institute in the College of Asia and the Pacific invites applications for a Master of Arts scholarship in Transnational Humanities in Korean Studies based on funding from the Academy of Korean Studies. We are seeking an individual with a deep-seated interest in Korea and a commitment to scholarly research in one of the disciplines of the humanities. The successful applicant will receive an annual stipend of A$23,000 for a period of two years, comprising one year of coursework followed by one year devoted to a research project culminating in a thesis. Additional funding for fieldwork is also available. The program of study must begin in August, 2012. NB: The second year of the scholarship will be awarded on the basis of the student achieving a Distinction average for the coursework undertaken in the first year. The successful applicant is expected to reside in Canberra throughout the 2-year period (excluding time spent abroad for purposes of fieldwork) and to be an active member of the ANU Korean studies community.

Eligibility & selection criteria

Successful applicants must meet the following criteria:
  • outstanding academic record and a minimum academic qualification equivalent to a Bachelor degree;
  • evidence of commitment to graduate study;
  • commitment to undertaking a program of study in history, literature, linguistics, music, politics, gender studies, or cultural studies;
  • demonstration of an appropriate level of proficiency in the Korean language;
  • for non-native English speakers, compliance with the University’s English language requirements of either:
    • IELTS score of 6.5 with at least 6.0 in each component of the test; or
    • TOEFL with either paper-based test score of 570 with TWE score of 4.5; computer-based test score of 230 with essay score of 4.5; or internet-based test score of 90 with a minimum of 20 in all four sections.
  • understanding of equal opportunity principles and knowledge of their application in a university context.

  • a three-page research proposal (including bibliography) demonstrating familiarity with the research area and outlining your approach to the MA research topic
  • a CV
  • contact information for two referees who can submit references
